La plata historical society

La Plata County Historical Society received LATC funding to replace the roof on the Joy Cabin, the oldest standing structure in Durango. The cabin was moved from its original location on the east side of North Main Avenue, once to Brookside Park, then to the grounds of the Animas Museum in 1988. The cabin was painstakingly rebuilt using original materials wherever possible and reopened to the public in 1998. The roof has lasted for over 20 years but has deteriorated to the point where it could fail under a heavy snow load, and interior leaking is imminent.
