Current Exhibition

The Durango Creative District presents our next exhibition Constructs & Extracts, which features mixed media sculptural work by Tom Calenberg and solar print etchings by Maureen May. Calenberg pulls from broad art historical references and his own alchemy to produce sculptural objects “rooted in mythic tales, literary experiences, and personal family history.” A true master of his craft, Calenberg utilizes painting, photography, metal, paper, fiber, wood, cloth, and found objects to create otherworldly sculptures, constructing a personal iconography with specific storytelling, while allowing viewers to ponder their other-worldly presence. Maureen May, a local legend in her own right, distills “images, sounds, tastes, conversations, emotions, and experiences” into intuitive abstractions of moments and memories through stunning and witty solar print abstractions. Together, the artists construct and extract their own realities into fantastic storytelling.

The exhibition is free and open to the public and coincides with September’s First Fridays Art Walk, as well as the annual Fall Gallery Walk.

Tom Calenberg will give a free artist talk on the mystery behind his pieces on Saturday, September 12th at 1pm, and Maureen May will offer a solar print demonstration and artist talk on Saturday, September 19th at 1pm.
