Park Elementary’s 5th Grade Legacy Project

LTAC funding supported the creation of a 5th Grade Legacy Mural at Park Elementary, engaging students in a hands-on public art project. Funds covered artist fee, paint, supplies, and project management, ensuring a high-quality, long-lasting mural that fostered creativity and community pride. The Walls Project oversaw logistics, guiding students through the design and painting process.

"It was incredible to see the pure joy and excitement this project brought to more than 90 students—watching them take pride in every brushstroke reminded all of us how much creativity and community spirit lives in Park Elementary."

- Thomas Donley, Co-Executive Director and CFO of The Walls Project

The project brought together over 90 students, educators, and a talented local artist, Laurie Callum, who demonstrated the incredible power of public art to build connection, pride, and shared purpose. The students brought the mural design to life, carefully painting colorful panthers, inspiring words used at Park Elementary, and books across the parking lot shed. The project celebrated teamwork, creativity, and the power of student voices in shaping their school environment. Held during April 2025, the project took place during standardized testing week, providing students with a creative outlet while enhancing the school’s environment. This mural has left a lasting impact, inspiring future students for years to come.

This program reinforced Park Elementary’s belief that when young people are given a voice in creative projects, they gain confidence and a sense of ownership in their community. “Seeing the excitement and curiosity ripple out beyond the 5th grade—sparking interest from younger students, families, and neighbors—reminded us how a single mural can transform not just a wall, but the spirit of a place. It was a privilege to witness this joyful collaboration and to help create something lasting for Park Elementary and the Durango community.” The final installation has sparked positive conversations among families and neighbors about the importance of creative spaces in schools.
