Cervidae Family mural
by ben rogers
Ben Rogers received LATC funding to cover the costs related to mural supplies and an artist’s fee. The funding for this project offered an interactive and educational experience to the Durango community while simultaneously creating a lasting mural project that can be enjoyed by all who explore, shop, and dine in Durango’s downtown Main Avenue.
On this “story board” wall, there is a scene of local Colorado animal and plant wildlife. Mule deer, elk, and moose, all intertwined in a grove of aspens. The aspens gradually change from summer to fall to winter. It celebrates the incredible and unique species we have here in Colorado.
Not only is the mural a gift of visual beauty and enrichment, but it also was an opportunity to educate and provide a behind-the-scenes look during the process of painting. During the two weekends in which the mural was completed, several collaborators assisted with the project. These included the San Juan Mountain Association and three individuals who were provided a stipend for their work with the project. The San Juan Mountain Association provided an educational table to interact with the public passing by while the mural was being painted. The three other individuals guided smaller art projects for any youth interested or inspired to create some art.
“A piece that took up nearly six lovely months of my life, the opportunity, subject matter, the location and surrounding community, I just couldn’t help but keep coming back to add more.…
To all of the memories and moments shared with so many beautiful people during the process, you all know who you are! This is something I will always hold dear to my heart!
Thank you to @cityofdurango and the LTAC fund for making this project possible!”
