“A Slow Crawl Towards Heaven” by Javon Jones
This new creation is a portal to the past, a reflection of the present, and a looking glass into the future. It is an attempt to reclaim black and brown ancestral stories through a decolonized lens. My new work utilizes the story of Moses to peer into the archetype of the root doctor, conjuror, and spirit worker who was ever present during the time of slavery - providing tinctures for healing, prayers for protection, and counsel to those of all races and societal status. This new creation is an extension of my research into the African and black American practices of conjure, hoodoo, and root-work where Moses was and remains an important figure.
"A Slow Crawl Towards Heaven" is a 60 minute evening-length dance theater piece which will premiere in two parts at Studio & and Merely Underground Theater in Durango, CO.
Here, the single performer introduces us to the inner worlds of the biblical character Moses, which are brimming with both faith and doubt. In this new dance theater piece, audiences will witness the profound humanity of Moses as they follow his inner journeys towards reconciling with a mission much larger than himself. This new choreographic work, set to an original score created by myself, is a visual portrayal of visceral reactions I sense Moses experienced as he prepared for the dangerous emancipation he was called to lead. How many times have you questioned the will of God? Have you ever felt underqualified for your life’s purpose?
Perhaps our hope and trust can be restored by taking the hand of our neighbor into our own and plunging into a world that evokes deep emotion and passionate conversation.
"A Slow Crawl Towards Heaven" will be the beginning of this conversation.
Javon Jones received funding from LTAC for the performance of “A Slow Crawl Towards Heaven” and to host a two day workshops.
